How to throw away crab and crayfish shells in Korea

게 · 가재 껍데기ge · gajae kkeopdegi

Short answer: General waste bag (종량제 봉투) — not food waste (rules vary by district).

Where it goes

General waste bag종량제 봉투
  1. Put crab, lobster and crayfish shells in a general waste bag.

Seoul’s food waste standard lists it as NOT food waste: food waste is processed into feed and compost, and hard or toxic bits damage the machines and the product. The standard names crabs and crayfish; for shrimp shells and heads, check with your district.

Check your district. This item is handled differently in some cities and districts. Your building notice or district office website has the final word.

About this bin

General waste goes in an official volume-based bag (종량제 봉투), bought at convenience stores and marts. Bags only work in the district they are sold for. Read the full guide →
