Large Waste in Korea 대형폐기물

Short answer: register furniture and other large items with your district (online, by app or at the 주민센터), pay the fee, label the item and put it out on the agreed day.

Furniture and other things too big for a bag are large waste — 대형폐기물 (daehyeong pyegimul). You pay a fee and register before putting it out.

Four steps

  1. Register on your district office website or app, or at the community service centre (주민센터). In Seoul you can also ask the 120 call centre for help.
  2. Pay the fee. It depends on the item and its size and is set by each district.
  3. Label it: attach the sticker, or write the registration number on the item, as your district asks.
  4. Put it out at the agreed place on the agreed day.

Leaving large items out without registering is illegal dumping and can be fined.

Big appliances are free

Refrigerators, washing machines, TVs and air conditioners do not need a sticker: book a free appliance pickup. Electric mats and massage chairs are the exception — those are large waste.
